His efforts began in 1935 in the Netherlands with crosses between the German Shepherd and the Eurasian gray wolf. The oldest of the formal extant wolfdogs, the Saarloos was a designer dog whose founder, Leendert Saarloos, aimed to “put some of the wild” back into the German Shepherd.
